online animal movement licensing for pigs
- Electronic supply chain information
- Online data collection and reporting
- Internet, SMS and digital pen and paper
- Government and industry interfaces
The UK's current animal movement recording systems remain largely paper-based, which means that they are expensive to operate and result in poor data quality, especially in terms of timeliness.
A modern Animal Movement and Information system
BPEX (a division of the Agriculture Horticulture and Development Board) commissioned everysite to produce an electronic animal movement (eAML) system for the English and Welsh pig sectors under contract from Animal Health.
The decision to deliver this system via BPEX was taken by a cross-sector industry panel at the start of 2009. The proposed solution was an expansion of existing tried and tested services using the CASI AMI system. It offered a low risk, cost effective and robust answer to the challenge of delivering electronic movement reporting in a diverse farming sector.
Facts and figures about the CASI Animal Movement and Information (AMI) system
CASI AMI has been recording electronic FCI and movement records since January 2008. So far it has successfully recorded over 90,000 consignments carrying 8.7 million animals. It is currently providing electronic documentation for over 40% of all pigs slaughtered in England with a target of 100% in 2011. There are 4,735 registered sites with over 1000 regularly providing electronic movement and food chain information.
Key Benefits
- Saves time, no need to fill in the same information again and again, the system will pre-populate all basic information automatically
- Up-to-date records providing accurate and timely information in the event of a disease outbreak
- Premises with computer access will not be required to retain paper movement documents as they are all stored safely online. Paper copies will, however, still need to be provided to the haulier
- Links to assurance schemes and government agencies providing accurate FCI, movement and producer information
Project Timeline - 2011 to 2012 Update
For the new eAML2 system to be used nationally it was necessary to amend the legislation that governs pig movements in England and Wales. The Pig Records, Identification and Movement Orders (PRIMO) will be replaced in England and Wales with new Orders to provide the statutory basis for electronic movement reporting.
October 2011 – Expected date for implementation of new legislation. Existing AML2 forms may still be used to report movements, for a transitional period, but these forms will be entered into the CASI AMI system. This means from October 1st 2011 100% of English and Welsh pig movements will be reported via the CASI AMI system. This equates to nearly 200,000 animals each month.
April 2012 ‐ Movements can no longer be reported using the old paper forms with all movements pre-notified onto the CASI AMI system.
Currently 40% of pig movements are reported by keepers themselves via our online systems. The remaining residual paper forms or non-IT equipped producers will be supported by the MLCSL bureau team using our data entry services.
